Jane Pow, right, and Nancy Inglis will be riding their bikes round London on May 25 to help raise money for three women’s cancer charities. The 100km night time ride will take in Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace.
The sights are a far cry from the quiet country rods around Denholm, Ancrum and Roberton where the intrepid duo have been gearing up for the event.
The idea was initially hatched by Nancy, 48, back in October, she said: “I spotted the event online and it really caught my eye. I then wondered who would be up for such a thing, and Jane sprang to mind.”
In reply Jane, 60, said: “Before I knew it, I had been signed up and told I was due the £45 entry fee. We were then unable to progress the training while I was taking care of my husband Alister. But finally, we agreed to begin cycling on January 7.”
Jane, who lives at Haugh Head, and is a former Denholm Primary School, said: “The last time I had rode a bike was when I was a teenager and would cycle into Hawick.” While Nancy, who lives at Cleuchfoot, near Hornshole and is a former Stow Primary School pupil confessed to never having really cycled before.
But every challenge must start somewhere and in recent weeks they have cycled back from Ancrum, then Hawick to Ancrum and back to Denholm as they are gradually clocking up the miles and the speed.
Looking ahead Nancy added: “Everyone can relate to cancer; the whole experience will be emotional and exhilarating.”
The charities are Breast Cancer Care; Jo’s Cervical Cancer; and Ovarian Cancer Action.
The two have already raised £380 towards their target, to donate log on to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jane-and-nancy.
