After a decade in the ring, local boxer Liam Rutherford is showing no signs of slowing down as he looks to build on his success.
The 17-year-old recently made headlines after winning an incredible ten Box Cup titles in a row – and the talented former high school pupil is now awaiting the outcome of his RAF application, while looking ahead to the next stage of his boxing career.
“I started boxing when I was seven,” he told The Hawick Paper.
“I wanted to give it a go and, as soon as I walked through the doors of Hawick Boxing Club, I loved it and I’ve never looked back since.
“I love the challenge that boxing brings.
“Every training session helps me improve and become a better boxer and every fight teaches me something new.
“I enjoy pushing myself, staying fit and testing myself against good opponents, while I also like the discipline the sport gives you and the friendships that I’ve made along the way.”
Adding, Rutherford said: “I’m really grateful to everyone at Hawick Boxing Club who have been on this journey with me.
“The coaches have given up so much of their own time to help me improve and I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
“The support from the local community has been brilliant, too, and it means a lot to me knowing that so many people are behind me and want to see me do well.”
Winning ten consecutive Box Cup titles remains the highlight of Liam’s career so far, but he believes there is much more to come.
“I just want to keep improving, gain more experience and see how far I can go in the sport, while hopefully I can box for the RAF and continue competing internationally,” he stated.
Liam’s family have supported him throughout his boxing journey, with his dad, Brad, paying tribute to his dedication.
“Most people only see him on fight night, but they don’t see the hard work, early mornings, long training sessions and sacrifices he makes.
“He’s dedicated to the sport and always gives 100 per cent.
“Whatever happens next, we’re proud of the way he represents himself, Hawick Boxing Club, and the town.
“We’re also very grateful to all the coaches and everyone involved with the club.”
