Purple lights will adorn the town hall this Christmas in a bid to increase awareness of cancer.

The Purple Lights for pancreatic cancer campaign, organised by Pancreatic Cancer UK, is throwing the spotlight on the disease and its symptoms, and the lights have been installed in memory of former community councillor, flood group member and Common-Riding Committee stalward Jim Little who lost his battle against pancreatic cancer in August, aged 82.

The idea was borne after Jim’s daughter Lynn Beveridge had a chance conversation about the idea with Marion Short, Hawick Community Council vice-chairwoman, and the wheels were soon in motion.

Talking to The Hawick Paper, Marion explained: “I approached [Scottish Borders Council’s local property manager] Frank Scott in the town hall who oversaw the installation of the lights.

“ I also took advice from Lindsay Nichol given that he, too, had suffered a similar family loss of his brother Ronnie.”

The community council had funded the lights, said Marion, who added: “Jim was a valuable and long-serving member and it was felt that in some way this was a personal tribute to him.”

Lynn added: “Our family is delighted this has been arranged to raise awareness of the disease and to get people to look at the various symptoms.”
