The open athletics season is upon us again and right at the heart of it all will be local athletes from Hawick Riverside Peds, Hawick Sprint Club and the Davie Rae and Alex Corbett running schools.

The first meeting of the term took place in Perthshire at Blackford last weekend but the Borders circuit gets off and running tomorrow (Saturday) with the Earlston Games.

The Hawick Paper has caught up with the coaches of the town’s running camps and Hawick Riverside Peds, Davie Grieve told us: “We started training back in March and things have been going well.

“There are new faces in the school as well as familiar ones.  In the seniors we have guys like John Paxton, Daniel Paxton and Ryan Elliot while Ronan McKean has just started training now that the rugby season has finished.

“There are several young runners in the school as well, including Connor Mcleod, Chloe Inglis, Rachel Fair, Ellis McKean and Keeley Womack who will be in the youths races”.

David Rae’s squad, back from left: Jai Patterson, Charlie Rae, Ryan Mcmichan, Finlay Douglas, David Rae, Sean Mcmichan, Kyle Potts, Ryan Stewart and James Park; middle row: Emma Philbin, Leanna Marshall, Maddi Patterson, Hope Stewart and Charlie Playford; front row: Iona Douglas, Leo Millar, Grace Marshall, Allie Carmichael, Rhianna Scott, Sophie Swan and Lana Stranger

Hawick Riverside Peds are being sponsored by Gibson’s Insurance Services and Elite Embroidery.

While the build up has been good for the Riverside Peds, matters have not gone so smoothly for Hawick Sprint Club due to an injury to star man James Parker.

Coach Che Campbell said: “James was very impressive last season.  He also reached the final of the New Year Sprint and I had high hopes that he would really make his mark again.

“I am confident he can but he is injured at the moment which is a real blow.  He played for the Presidents Seven in the Hawick Sevens and pulled a hamstring.

“It was a grade one tear which is not good and he will miss the opening meeting of the season. James had been training hard but that’s the way it goes.”

On his stable, Davie Rae said: “For the past two seasons training has been quite intense in the school and it has paid off as we had loads of wins.

“This season however, we are easing off a little and setting no targets.  We are still hoping to do well though and got a great start as young Sophie Swan, who is a new face, won the youths 90 metres handicap at Blackford last Saturday.

“We have a huge amount of youngsters in the squad now and they are all looking forward to the season ahead.”
