Hawick will today be handed a £1.3million funding boost for regeneration projects in the town.

The windfall has been secured via a bid by Scottish Borders Council to Historic Environment Scotland’s Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS).

It is thought buildings that could be earmarked for repair and restoration include the former Liberal Club at 80 High Street, the Crown Business Centre at 22 High Street, and the former Queens Head pub at 32 High Street.

Speaking to The Hawick Paper, Councillor Watson McAteer said: “I’m delighted that Historic Environment Scotland are backing Hawick for CARS support. The funding will go a long way to renovating a number of derelict buildings and several in a poor state, while creating a fresh and vibrant appearance for our town.

“These renovations will complement work [on the £2.6million business hub] soon to commence at Almstrong’s, creating access to new businesses in Commercial Road, and making Hawick a destination of choice for visitors and locals alike.”

Councillor Stuart Marshall added: “Townsfolk and businesses along our High Street will be thrilled to hear of this huge cash injection and much praise must be afforded to everyone who has assisted with the preparatory work in submitting this application.

“Many rundown buildings are now set to benefit immensely from regeneration work that on completion can only enhance the visual appearance of several historic parts of our town .”

Councillor Mark Rowley, SBC’s executive member for economic development, said: “I’m delighted that we have been successful in our application for CARS funding for Hawick and I’d like to commend the local community for working with our officers to develop this ambitious proposal.

“This CARS project, along with other investments in the town, such as the redevelopment of the former Almstrong’s site, the new Galalaw business units, and the Centre of Excellence in Textiles, will help provide a catalyst for wider regeneration and investment from the private sector.”

Community groups including Hawick Community Council, Future Hawick and Hawick Archaeological Society were also all involved in the successful bid for CARS funding.

“An important element of the scheme will be raising awareness of the town’s rich history and heritage, and a programme of skills and employment training based around traditional construction skills,” added a council spokesman.

SBC has committed almost £160,000 to the scheme, with further public sector contributions being sought.
