    So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen to legendary town Cornet Chuck

    Charles ‘Chuck’ Whillans 1923-2018

    Tributes are being paid from a wide spectrum of the community following the death of ex-Cornet Charles N. Whillans in the Margaret Kerr Unit at Borders General Hospital on Monday.

    Affectionately known to all as Chuck, here was a man who had a life-long passion and love for all things pertaining to Hawick and the Common-Riding. As well as the 1948 Cornet, he was Acting Father 1967, Master of Ceremonies, on the Common-Riding Committee for many years, and Callants’ Club president 1973 – hence he was often referred to as “Mr Common-Riding”.
