On a wet and cold afternoon at Balgray, Hawick used the pain and embarrassment of the previous week’s mauling by Heriot’s as the brick wall off which they can bounce back stronger and better equipped to succeed in what is shaping up to be an almighty battle to avoid the drop.
Gary Johnstone gave the Greens an excellent start when he intercepted on his own 10-yard line and darted home, but Hawks bounced back when Kyle Rowe came off his wing to take a straight feed from the base of a scrum from George Horne and dot down under the posts.
Horne and Rowe combined again, this time with a delicate chip-kick being caught in full stride for another unchallenged runin, to give Hawks a 12-5 halftime lead.
Tries from Bobby Beattie and Callum Kerr secured the bonus point for Hawks after the break, but Hawick kept in touch with two Ali Weir penalties, and then mounted a furious late rally which brought a try for Matt Carryer and then squeezed a third penalty opportunity which Weir happily turned into three points to secure the losing bonus point.
