It was Oxton Games last Saturday and conditions were appalling, with torrential rainfall throughout most of the Justicehall Haugh track meeting.
Two Hawick runners, Keeley Womack and Derek Scott, however, overcame the elements to chalk up excellent victories.
From the Hawick Riverside Peds school, 13-year-old Womack was the first triumph in the youths’ 90m handicap.
Competing from a mark of 15 metres, Womack showed she had something special to offer in her heat when soaring to an impressive win in her heat in 10.27 seconds which was the fastest time of the opening runs.
This win earned her a final place along with training companion Rachel Fair (25m), who had also won her heat through a fine run.
Womack who has been showing up well throughout the season then did it all again in the final in blitzing home in 10.24 seconds.
Reflecting on her winning show, Womack told The Hawick Paper: “I have been trying really hard to get a win and have been coming close.
“Although I was pleased to win my heat, I didn’t think I would win the final as I thought that the boy runners who were behind me would catch me near the finish. It didn’t happen though and I was very pleased about this and very excited to have got a win.”

Members of the Alex Corbett school were well to the fore for Hawick in midweek games prior to Oxton Games.
Rory Anderson pulled off a unique double at Rosneath Games by winning the 90m handicap and the hill race
Anderson also emerged the winner of the 200 metres handicap at Burntisland Games.
Kyle Potts gained first spot in the 220 yards handicap at Mull Games while Derek Scott won the mile handicap.
Winner of the 1,600 metres handicap at Mull Games a few days previous, Scott (245m), who is coached by Alex Corbett, led the race as the bell sounded for the last lap after having overtaken fellow Hawick runner Alan Inglis (300m).
Scott duly hung on to his front spot to win in four minutes 41.05 seconds Greg Walker (120m) and Jamie Waugh (215m), who are also from the Corbett, stable emerged second and third.
Scott said of his triumph: “It’s my third win of the season as I won at Kelso Games recently and at Mull Games a few days ago and now this. I am really chuffed as I hadn’t expected to do so well this season.
“I had been running at games meetings up north during the week, so I had tired legs this afternoon. However, I was determined to do well and give my best.”
Hawick sprinters DanielElliot (10.5m), Corey Wilson (12.5m), David Hush (25m) and David Lauder (15m) all reached the final of the 110 metres handicap.
But it was Eyemouth teenager Marshall Smith of TLJT (14.5m) who gained the bragging rights. In his first season in the senior ranks, Smith clocked up a winning time of 11.68 seconds.
Lauder was second and Wilson third. Hawick girls Lana Stanger (25m) and Hope Stewart qualifying for the final of the junior 90 metres handicap with heat wins in 10.37 seconds and 10.46 seconds.
In a keenly-contested and exciting final, Stanger emerged an extremely close second to victor Eve Rathie of Leithenburn (23m). The winning time was 10.37 seconds.
Jai Patterson (36m) and Cian Riddell (33m) also shone for Hawick in the youths’ 200 metres handicap.
Following impressive heatwins, the Hawick youngsters gave their all in the final only to be edged out on the line by Aidan Bambrick of Jed AC (26m). Patterson was second and Riddell third.
Back marker Fraser Clyne (35m) came in third to front runner Matty Fleming of Kelso (360m) in the youths’ 1600m handicap.
