A new group has been launched in a bid to lure more visitors to the Hawick area.
The Town of a Thousand Trails aims to turn the local area into a mecca for walkers, cyclists, horse riders, runners and canoeists – and it is hoped the intiative will eventually lead to Hawick and surrounding villages rivalling the Lake District as a visitor destination.
Group spokesperson, local solicitor Rory Bannerman, told us: “Our vision sums up the exciting expectation that there are at least 1,000 different trails in the TD9 area to be freely used by all.
“By building a brand new website and mapping and providing signage to trails in the town and surrounding area, our focus is on turning Hawick and villages such as Denholm, Bonchester Bridge and Newcastleton into a match for the likes of the Lake District.
“The idea will welcome walkers, cyclists, horse riders, runners, canoeists and more besides to the TD9 area in the expectation that there will be trails of different terrains and distances for locals and visitors alike to enjoy.”
Mr Bannerman added that they expected to see increased numbers savouring “our wonderful countryside” which, in turn, would help the area to grow financially, as well as benefit and increase local businesses.
The Town of a Thousand Trails group has submitted a £3,000 application to Scottish Borders Council’s Localities Bid Fund. Their bid is among the 14 in Teviot and Liddesdale which will go to a public vote next month.
