There’s still life in the Greens as they go into the final furlongs in the BT Premiership, but with the last game not until March 3, ironically against Melrose in Saturday’s return fixture, the performance in defeat on Saturday at The Greenyards provided an aura of optimism for the future.
Hawick won the second half 14-6 – if only they had been able to contain a rampant Melrose in the first 40 minutes as they played catch-up rugby.
Melrose were without Nyle Godsmark, Ross McCann and Sam Pecquer on Scotland Sevens duty, while Bruce Colvine was in action abroad, but that is not to detract from an improving Hawick.
