Travellers who set up camp in Hawick earlier this week could be the “thin end of the wedge”, according to Councillor George Turnbull.
It is understood that the four caravans, which had French and German number plates, arrived at the Common Haugh on Sunday night, before leaving the town on Wednesday morning.
They were the second group to pitch up illegally in Hawick in recent months.
Their arrival followed the public outcry over alleged fly-tipping by travellers at Lower Mansfield in July, with the resultant clean-up costing a “small fortune”.
