The vandals behind last week’s incident at the war memorial have been caught on CCTV, police have confirmed.

However, it remains to be seen whether footage of the two wreaths being set on fire will enable officers to identify the perpetrators, so said community beat officer Stuart Hogg at Monday night’s community council meeting in the lesser town hall.

“They [the vandals] have been captured on camera and inquiries are still ongoing,” he said.

“[But] whether we’re able to get anything from that [the footage], I don’t know.”

The sickening incident, which saw wreaths from the King’s Own Scottish Borderers Association and Lodge 111 being set alight, caused widespread public revulsion in the town, and led to local businesses putting up a reward of £600 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrators.
