Sharkey hits out as Legion wield the axe

Clinton Sharkey admitted this week that he was “very angry” after being sacked as manager of Hawick Legion.

Sharkey was told during a meeting with club officials on Sunday that his services were no longer required and he was dismissed.

Burnfoot-based Legion, who have a very young squad, are sitting eighth in the Border Amateur B Division, with four wins to their name from 12 matches.

In his second season as Legion boss, Sharkey told The Hawick Paper: “Words fail me. I didn’t see this coming and I can’t take it in.

“However, I’m raging, very angry, very disappointed and annoyed. Okay, results might not have been good but we are a very young team, a team of laddies in fact. We were building for the future, though, and I knew that when I took on the job and so did the committee.”

He added: “I’ve had no talks with the committee to hear that they were not happy with the way things were going and I don’t think there’s any justification in them sacking me, especially with a good part of the season still to go.”

A Legion spokesman commented: “We would like to thank Clinton for his commitment and hard work during his time with the club and wish him all the best for the future.”
