Major John William Joseph Paton MBE, who died in Aberdeenshire in November was born in Hawick on June 8, 1924.
His parents were Isabella, nee Graham, and Archibald, an electrical engineer’s labourer who had served as a medic in the First World War. John was one of seven children.
