A budding young journalist enjoyed a taste of cutting-edge news coverage while on holiday with his family in Florida last week.
Fifteen-year-old Ryan Murdie, who has been involved with the Hawick High News team since he started at the school four years ago, had his picture taken with the NBC news team outside the Orlando Convention Centre, where US President Donald Trump was delivering a keynote speech to police officers.
While he was unlucky not to catch a glimpse of President Trump – as he had left the convention via a rear entrance – Ryan was thrilled to grab a few minutes with a reporter covering the story.
Speaking to The Hawick Paper, Ryan, a former Wilton school pupil, said: “I was with my dad [Gary], my mum [Joanne] and sister (Leah), and we were on our way to lunch when we heard that the president was at the convention centre. We thought we’d try to catch a glimpse of him, as we may never get the chance again. We stood at the front of the convention centre where there were many protesters.
“Then the reporter Amanda [Ober] came over to ask where we were from and I was delighted to get my picture taken with her and Graham, the cameraman.”
