A blunt warning that assets may need to be sold to prop up Hawick’s cash-strapped common good fund has triggered a fierce response – with Councillor Stuart Marshall declaring: “Hawick is not for sale.”

Mr Marshall hit out after a report at yesterday’s meeting of the council’s executive suggested disposing of historic assets to help plug gaping holes in the fund’s finances.
