    The Teri exile who spent a life on – and under – the ocean waves

    Teri exile Derek Howe, BEM, MSM, who died last month, had spent a career in the Royal Navy spanning 34 years. He was 83.

    He may have left Hawick in 1952, but his heart never left the town of his birth, keeping up a strong friendship with fellow Teries all his life.

    He was married to Teri Eleanor Gibson for 60 years, the couple first meeting at a New Year dance in the Crown Hotel in 1958.
