VE Day celebrations last Friday should have been a time for great rejoicing but, due to the coronavirus restrictions, events across the country and in Hawick were replaced by home and online tributes.
Friday marked 75 years since the formal acceptance of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender – Victory in Europe Day. Of course, for many servicemen still in the Far East fighting the Japanese, world hostilities would not finally end until August 15.
Rules on social distancing and a ban on gatherings meant private tributes were enacted around the town and surrounding countryside by individuals in their own way.
