One hundred years ago to the day, October 3, 1918, Major William F. Beattie MC, the sculptor of the 1514 Memorial, was killed in the First World War.
On Wednesday night this celebrated son of Hawick was remembered in a procession along the High Street to his iconic masterpiece in Central Square.
Welcoming a gathering estimated at some 1,000 Teries and visitors to the commemoration, Provost Watson McAteer told them: “We are remembering in sadness the death of a revered and very humble son of Hawick but also with great pride a young man whose talents, skills and heroism have left an indelible mark on each and every one of us.
