'The Buffs'

The Royal Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes (or Buffs for short) once had two branches in Hawick. Members of the Order collectively part with a million pounds each year for good causes. A bishop, two Prime Ministers and the Lord Chief Justice have belonged to the Order. Unlike many other ‘secret societies’, talk of politics, religion and gambling is strictly forbidden. There is no colour bar or racism – though Communists are strictly excluded, because a member of the Order must declare their allegiance to Constitutional authority of their country!

Meetings were once held regularly at Slitrig Lodge (no. 9858), and the Teviotdale Lodge (no. 10417) – the latter closed on May 25, 1990, and as recently as 2015, Slitrig Lodge 9858 met at Trinity Bar.
